"At the end of the night, about 130 people signed up to receive more information about volunteer groups or the organization or to commit themselves to participate in the process again.
David Kenrick, owner of Instructional Technology Solutions, signed up for more information or to volunteer in two mentoring groups, Texas Scholars and Young Odyssey.
The A&M-Corpus Christi doctoral student's Community Leadership Development Class attended the forum.
"My career has one foot in K-12 and one in higher education," he said. "I've always had an interest in education that continues through life. Texas Scholars does that."
Kayakers keep rust off by rolling in indoor pool -

"If a kayaker is forced to ditch his boat, it's tradition for him to drink alcohol from his Neoprene booties after the run. Drinking from a stinky piece of footwear that is shoved into the bottom of a kayak and soaked in river water for hours is great motivation to avoid getting out of the boat.
The solution is perfecting a roll - the ability to right a kayak when turned over - which is the best way to minimize the chance of injury or death.
The process takes time and can be quite cold to learn outside.
That's why the 84-degree Grizzly pool is the perfect spot for kayakers to keep on top of their form and knock some rust off during winter."

"Angel
Perez trades sandals for ski boots in Lake Placid
LAKE
PLACID, NY - Lake Placid weather can be brutal
for athletes who train outdoors in the winter.
Especially when they are used to training in sunny
California and Florida year round. Just ask the
14 athletes who participated in the winter training
camp for the Sprint Canoe/Kayak teams at the Olympic
Training Center (OTC) January 3-13, 2002.
"It's so cooooold," said Miami native
Marie Mijalis, who with her twin sister Jeanne
made the trip from their home at the OTC in Chula
Vista, Calif. for the camp."

Top 10 Things you Must Know about Summer Camp - by Kelle L. Larkin - February / March 2004 -
From: www.glfamily.com

"Summer camp talk? At this time of year, when the
ground is frozen solid and furnaces are blasting full force? Yep. It's time.
It's time to ponder campfires, nature hikes
and bug bites. It's time to think about the notoriously bad food (and the
equally notorious camaraderie and fabulous growth experience) of summer camp.
Slots fill up by early spring - so what are you waiting for? Here are some
tips to ponder before you pack the bags.
1 - Do your homework. The most
important thing to consider, camp experts agree, is the accreditation of the
camp in question."

"LAKE
PLACID, N.Y. - Since ancient times, cultures across
the world have used the canoe for transportation
and sport alike. In the American Pacific Northwest,
Native American tribesmen carved dugout canoes
from whole trees large enough to carry as many
as 50 people. Further north, Aleuts and other
Arctic peoples built kayaks from a framework of
whalebone and driftwood, over which were stretched
sea lion skins treated with whale fat.
The
boats were a crucial part of Eskimo survival,
necessary for fishing and hunting."
